New York Giants releasing linebacker Bobby Okereke

The New York Giants have informed linebacker Bobby Okereke they are releasing him to free up salary cap space.

The move, expected to be official next week, saves the team $9 million against the cap compared to his previous number. It comes as new head coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson look to overhaul the position.

Okereke, 30, led the team with 78 tackles last season and was a team captain. The Giants also have the fifth overall pick and are looking to improve a defense that ranked 28th in the league.
