Mount Saint Mary women's basketball to host Skyline quarterfinal game
The Mount Saint Mary women's basketball team will be the No. 3 seed in this week's Skyline Conference tournament.
The Knights concluded the regular season on Feb. 21 with a 75-64 loss at Manhattanville, which earned the Valiants the Skyline tourney top seed with the victory - it snapped a five-game win streak by the Mount.
The Knights - long the dominant team in the Skyline - had already wrapped up the No. 3 seed, and will host No. 6 Sarah Lawrence in a quarterfinal playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Mount swept Sarah Lawrence twice this season, 85-58 on Nov. 22 in Newburgh and 76-60 on Jan. 24 in Bronxville.
The winner of that playoff will travel to No. 2 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (21-4, 18-2) for a semifinal on Friday, Feb. 27.
Mount Saint Mary has dropped two Skyline games to Manhattanville and Farmingdale State and once to U.S. Merchant Marine.
The semifinal winners will play at the highest remaining seed on Sunday, March 1.
The Mount Saint Mary men failed to qualify for the Skyline tournament for the third season in a row, finishing 0-16 in league play and 2-23 overall. No Knights team in recorded history (back to 1986-87) had posted fewer than seven overall wins or three Skyline wins.
Both the Skyline women's and men's tournament schedules have been shifted by one day due to the expected impacts of the early week blizzard: the quarterfinals will be played Wednesday, Feb. 25; the semifinals on Friday, Feb. 27; and, the finals on Sunday, March 1).
