The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly planning to release veteran guard Mekhi Becton in the coming days, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. This move will save the Chargers approximately $9.7 million in cap space.
The Chargers would have owed Becton a $2.5 million roster bonus on March 13 and an additional $1 million bonus on March 15 if the franchise chose not to release him. Los Angeles went into the offseason with a projected $86 million in salary cap space and a plan to improve their interior offensive line.
In addition to Becton, the Chargers will need to find a replacement for center Bradley Bozeman, who announced his retirement in February.
Injuries Were A Big Issue For Becton in 2025
Becton joined the Chargers on a two-year, $20 million deal in March 2025. However, his single season with the Chargers was disappointing, as he missed multiple games with various injuries.
The six-season NFL veteran, who the New York Jets drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, was the NFL’s third-worst lineman in run block win rate (63.4%) and only played in 72 percent of snaps for the Chargers in 2025.
Becton dealt with a lingering knee injury, a hand injury, a concussions and illness during the 2025 season.
“It hasn’t been what I wanted,” Becton said to ESPN’s Kris Rhim in November about how his season had been going.
Becton also struggled with injuries during his four seasons with the Jets. His most successful and healthy season was with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 when he started in 15 games as right guard and won Super Bowl LIX.
Becton will become an unrestricted free agent after the Chargers release him. Therefore, he will be able to explore options with other teams that he may find more success with than he did with the Chargers in 2026.
