Askey hails Truro character after draw at Southend

Truro City manager John Askey says he is impressed with his side's character after their 1-1 draw at Southend United.

The Tinners had lost their previous five matches, four of which had seen the Cornish side concede result-changing goals in the final 10 minutes.

But Askey's side held on for a point against play-off chasing Southend, although they are still 11 points from safety at the bottom of the National League.

"To come here having lost the last few games in the dying minutes and to show the character and spirit that they did tonight, and play as well as he did is remarkable," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"We've travelled all day from one side of the country to the other and first half we should have been probably three up.

"To come here and get something shows what a great character the players have got."

City have 11 games to go in their first season in fifth-tier football as they try and avoid relegation.

But Askey says the result shows an upturn in performances in recent months, even if results have not always been what he felt his side deserved:

"Obviously when you lose, then you're down, but we pick ourselves up and we go again, and that's been the case all season," he added.

"I think the way that we've been playing, I think we've improved quite a lot since Christmas, even though we haven't got results.

"I think we've been in most of the games and games where you think surely we must win at least two or three, we haven't for whatever reason

"It's not a case of taking confidence from this, I think we take confidence in the way that we've played over a number of weeks now."
