The Mets beat Team Nicaragua, 6-3, on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie.
Here are the takeaways...
-Jonah Tongmade his second Grapefruit League start and continued to work on his arsenal.
Tong, who threw mainly four-seam fastballs and changeups last season during his brief stint in the majors, spent a lot of time working on his other offerings on Tuesday -- something he also did during his first start last week.
Out of the 54 pitches (34 strikes, 20 balls) he threw, just 30 were four-seamers (24) or changeups (6), with most of the other pitches being cutters (20). Tong threw four curveballs.
Overall, Tong gave up one run (on a solo homer) on five hits while walking none and striking out three in 2.2 innings.
Tong's four-seam fastball topped out at 95.8 mph.
-Jorge Polanco was the DH as he saw his first Grapefruit League action of the year. He went 0-for-3.
- Bo Bichette had a big day at the plate.
He had a sacrifice fly his first time up, walked in his second plate appearance, and hit a ringing double to left-center field his third and final time up.
Bichette made a throwing error in the fourth inning, charging in from third base and double-clutching before unleashing a wide throw to first base. The play was ruled a hit, with the error allowing the runner to advance to second base.
- Devin Williams was dominant, striking out the side in his inning of work. One of the strikeouts came on Williams' patented changeup, while the other two came on the slider he's developing.
- Marcus Semien led off the game by ripping a double to left-center field, and scored on Bichette's sacrifice fly. He finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
- Francisco Alvarez got the start behind the plate and caught five innings. He looped an RBI single down the left field line in his second at-bat and finished 1-for-3.
- Brett Baty got the start at first base as he continues to get acclimated to the position. At the plate, he went 0-for-2 with a walk.
- Luke Weaver was sharp in a perfect inning, striking out one. He threw 15 pitches (11 strikes).
- Craig Kimbrel allowed three hits in his inning of work, though the contact against him wasn't particularly hard. Kimbrel's fastball topped out at 93.4 mph, and he liberally mixed in his sweeper -- which he induced a strikeout on.
- Outfielder Mike Tauchman, who is competing for a spot on the roster, went 1-for-3.
- Vidal Brujan delivered a two-run single.
