I think it’s safe to say this has been an odd offseason for Matt LaFleur so far.
It started with legitimate questions about whether or not he would return to Green Bay for the 2026 season, proceeded to the not-unexpected loss of his defensive coordinator, took a turn toward the absurd when his special teams coordinator abruptly and unexpectedly left the team, and then landed in the realm of farce when an NFLPA survey revealed a good number of his players don’t seem to actually like him.
That’s a lot of moving pieces, and if you feel like it reflects poorly on LaFleur, it’s hard to disagree. There may not be fire at Lambeau, but there’s a lot of smoke pointing to things not being all well under LaFleur.
Does that mean things can’t change? No, of course not. The late, great John Madden once said, “Winning is great deodorant,” and wins would change a lot of minds in Green Bay. But it’s the kind of wins that matter, too. Postseason victories. Championships. That’s what LaFleur needs to change the conversation.
Is he the one to deliver them? It’s hard to say, and that may be a conclusion worth exploring in and of itself. If we can’t say for sure that LaFleur is “the guy” heading into year eight, when will it be true?
