Boys basketball: Pirates, Cougars end regular season with wins

Greensburg and South Decatur rounded out the boys’ basketball regular season with a win.

Greensburg knocked off EIAC foe East Central 61-51. The Pirates end the season at 11-13 overall and 4-3 in the EIAC.

The Pirates were led in scoring by Jacoby Miller with 20 points. Jonah Hellmich had a big night with 14 points. Zayden Miller scored 10 points followed by Max Buening five, Ethan Smith five, Hayden Ramsey four and Logan Simpson three.

Jacoby Miller also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Buening pulled down three boards. Smith and Simpson both had two rebounds. Hellmich, Zayden Miller and Ramsey all had one rebound.

Simpson dished out a team-leading four assists. Smith handed out three assists and Buening added two assists.

South defeated Knightstown 74-60 to finish the regular season at 15-6.

Cayden Drake led the Cougars in scoring with 28 points. Drake Scaggs was next for South with 20 points. Karson Templeton added 16 points followed by Aidan Bryant seven and Tayedin Traylor three.

Drake and Bryant tied for team-high honors in rebounds with eight each. Templeton grabbed six rebounds. Scaggs had five rebounds. Brayden Gerrian grabbed four boards. Traylor finished with three rebounds. Grady Scudder and Paul Schoettmer both had one rebound.

Scaggs finished with a team-high 11 assists. Templeton dished out three assists. Bryant and Gerrian both added two assists.

Billy Stein had 28 points for Knightstown and Brody Adams added 21 points.

Sectional look

The state tournament tips off Tuesday around the state. Two area teams open on the first night, but at separate Class 3A sectionals.

Class 3A

Greensburg plays in Game 1 at 6 p.m. at South Dearborn against Lawrenceburg. The Tigers ended the regular season 7-17 overall and 1-6 in the EIAC.

The Pirates and Tigers met Jan. 30 at Greensburg. The Pirates posted a 64-45 victory against Lawrenceburg. The Pirates led 22-12 after the first quarter and led at the end of each quarter break en route to the win.

Three Pirates scored in double figures that night. Jacoby Miller had 19 points followed by Buening 15 points and Smith 10 points.

Lawrenceburg was led in scoring by Evan Lewis with 12 points and Kaleb Cole with 10 points.

The winner will face Batesville, drew the bye, in the sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

At Greenwood, Rushville (8-15) opens the tournament at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the Woodmen (13-9).

Greenwood averages 61.6 ppg offensively while the Lions average 44.2 ppg. The teams have two common opponents.

Both teams faced Shelbyville and Greenfield-Central in the regular season. The Lions fell to both the Golden Bears and the Cougars during the regular season. Greenwood lost 67-58 to Shelbyville and knocked off Greenfield-Central 59-43.

The winner advances to take on Shelbyville in the sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

Class A

North (11-13) and South will square off in the second game Wednesday at Tri. The first game at 6 p.m. pits Knightstown and Edinburgh. The Chargers and Cougars will face on a neutral site after splitting the regular season contests.

South won the first meeting 62-45 on the Cougars’ home court. The Chargers earned the season split with a 71-68 win at North.

The Cougars have three players averaging double figures in scoring on the season. Scaggs leads the way at 20.7 ppg. Drake is next at 18.7 ppg and Templeton averages 11-1. Gerrian averages 6.4 ppg followed by Bryant 5.6 ppg and Traylor 3.6 ppg.

Drake and Templeton lead the Cougars in rebounding at 8.0 and 6.5 rpg respectively. Scaggs dishes out 5.9 assists per game.

North is led in scoring by Owen Rennekamp at 14.8 ppg. Logan O’Dell averages 11.0 ppg. Wyatt Reisman averages 7.6 ppg followed by Matthew Fields 4.8, Charlie Parmer 4.7, Mason Kunz 4.4, Garrett Schwering 2.6, Sam Crowell 2.2 and Henry Kinker 1.8.

Kunz and Fields both average 4.5 rpg and O’Dell averages 4.4 rpg. Rennekamp averages 4.9 assists per contest.

Coming into sectional action, both teams have won three of the last four regular season games.
