It was a dramatic weekend for the USC baseball team. After starting off the season 7-0 at home, the Trojans traveled up to Cal Poly for their first road trip of the 2026 season. USC won all four games—with several coming in exciting fashion—to improve to a remarkable 11-0 on the season.
Let’s recap the weekend series:
Thursday: Shutout victory
The Trojans started off the series with a 4-0 shutout victory. Chase Herrell threw five scoreless innings, and the bullpen locked things down for the final four frames.
Friday: Extra innings no-no
Earlier this season, USC’s pitching staff through a seven-inning no-hitter that ended on a walk-off mercy rule. This time, they actually threw ten innings of hitless ball, but neither team scored a run in the first ten frames, so the game continued to the 11th, where the Trojans’ offense finally broke through and scored six runs. USC finally allowed a hit in the bottom of the 11th, but still won the game 6-0.
Saturday: Offensive clinic
After USC’s pitching dominated the first two games of the series, it was the offense who showed up on Saturday. The Trojans put 16 runs on the board en route to a 16-2 domination.
Sunday: More drama in extras
After leading for the entire afternoon, USC allowed Cal Poly to tie the game at six in the bottom of the ninth. For the second time in three days, however, the Trojans came through in the 11th inning, scoring two runs to pull out an 8-6 victory.
Up next
After an incredible 11-0 stretch to open the year, USC will look to keep its perfect record intact with five games back at Dedeaux Field this week. The Trojans will host UC Irvine on Tuesday and Waseda University from Japan in an exhibition Wednesday, before opening up Big Ten play with a three-game weekend series against Illinois.
