Monti Ossenfort is heading into his fourth season as the Arizona Cardinals‘ general manager, and he’s already on his second head coach. The Cardinals have yet to reach the playoffs in Ossenfort’s tenure, and he hasn’t had a chance to handpick his own quarterback yet, either.
That appears to be changing this offseason, as the Cardinals move closer to parting ways with Kyler Murray. The question is, how will the Cardinals move on from Murray? Will they cut him from the roster and take a $54.7 million dead cap charge? Or can the Cardinals find a trade partner for the two-time Pro Bowl QB?
According to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, if it were up to Murray, he’d prefer to be released from the roster rather than traded to his next team. Murray is set for a meeting with the Cardinals’ top brass later this week at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.
Of course, it makes sense for Murray to prefer to be cut rather than traded. Being released gives him a chance to hit the open market, which could help him get another rich payday. Plus, he’d be able to pick and choose his next opportunity rather than be assigned to a team.
Murray’s camp “feels he’ll be the top QB on the market” this offseason. Thus, they may be eager to see what teams are willing to pay for the 28-year-old.
According to Vacchiano, the Cardinals have grown “frustrated” with Murray over concerns of his work ethic and “quiet personality.” Arizona also doubts that Murray can be the same caliber of player he was during his Pro Bowl seasons and believes his mobility is “shot.”
While the Cardinals may feel that way, others will surely be curious if they can make magic with the former No. 1 overall pick. We could get a chance to find out soon enough.
