It has been another European night to forget for German giant Borussia Dortmund, with Niko Kovač looking on as Die Schwarzgelben faltered at New Balance Arena.
After jumping to a 2-0 aggregate lead last week, Dortmund were down on the night after strikes from Gianluca Scamacca ('5), Davide Zappacosta (45'), and Mario Pašalić (57').
A hit from Karim Adeyemi brought them back to life in the 75th minute, however, with the effort from the German international en route to forcing extra time before a massive call in the dying minutes of stoppage time ended their continental campaign.
While defending a cross, full-back Ramy Bensebaini was judged to have committed a foul on Scamacca when attempting to block a ball into the box, with his studs making contact with the Italian's forehead.
After VAR review, Bensebaini received a second yellow and a subsequent sending off for the incident, which would see Atalanta earn a penalty in the 7th minute of added time for Lazar Samardžić to slam home into the top corner to book La Dea's passage into the round of 16.
A monumental collapse from the Germans, just days before their titanic Bundesliga clash against bitter rival Bayern Munich, could not have come at a more inopportune moment.
