Canadiens’ Alex Newhook to return vs. Islanders

The Montreal Canadiens will return from the Olympic break with a boost to their forward corps.

Alex Newhook is set to make his return to the lineup on Thursday against the New York Islanders, head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed.

The 25-year-old has been out of action since Nov. 13 after fracturing his ankle and undergoing subsequent surgery.

Newhook suffered the injury against the Dallas Stars when he was tripped up and went feet-first into the end boards.

In 17 games before hitting the injured reserve, Newhook totalled six goals and six assists while carrying a plus-7 mark.

The St. John’s, N.L., native joined the Canadiens via trade from the Colorado Avalanche before the 2023-24 season.

In Newhook’s spot, Zachary Bolduc is expected to be a healthy scratch.

The 23-year-old has 10 goals and 13 assists in 57 games for the Canadiens in 2025-26.

Montreal returns to the ice sitting second in the Atlantic Division with a 32-17-8 record. It entered the break with wins in four of its last five games, which included impressive wins over the Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres.
