Egypt advanced to the round of 16 with their first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory, beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning penalty as Egypt made history in their World Cup knockout debut. Mohamed Salah started despite a hamstring injury, while Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead before Mohamed Hany scored two own-goals for Australia, a first in World Cup history.
