Steelers to Use Weekly Captains Under McCarthy

Published September 7, 2026 · Updated September 7, 2026 · NBC Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike McCarthy will not use full-season captains, opting instead to designate weekly team leaders, a departure from previous practices under Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers will not have permanent captains for the entire 2026 season, as new head coach Mike McCarthy announced he'll follow his previous approach of naming captains for each week's game. This marks a significant change from last season when the team had four permanent captains: quarterback Aaron Rodgers, defensive lineman Cameron Heyward, linebacker T.J. Watt, and safety Miles Killebrew, with Payton Wilson later replacing Killebrew as special-teams captain after his injury. catcross.biz
