On Day 3 of the Duleep Trophy final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, South Zone struggled, as they went to stumps on 242/6, against East Zone’s first-innings total of 708.
South Zone suffered an early setback when Ricky Bhui was trapped leg-before off Mukesh Kumar for one after East Zone made a successful review. Narayanan Jagadeeshan scored a fluent 32 off 42 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal added a patient 62 off 104 deliveries. Again, it was Mukesh who dismissed an in-form Padikkal.
East Zone kept taking wickets at regular intervals as Mohammed Shami removed Shaik Rashid (27) and Ravichandran Smaran (23), leaving South Zone under immense pressure.
While the innings was in danger of folding up, South Zone captain Tilak Varma showed resilience and remained unbeaten on 56 off 133 balls at the end of the day’s play.
Veteran all-rounder Shreyas Gopal (26) supported the captain for a while before falling to Kounain Quraishi at the fag end of the day.
East Zone’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout, with Shami bowling brilliantly and returning with 2/17 from 11 overs, including four maidens.
South Zone trail by 466 runs, with just four wickets remaining in their first innings.
Brief scores: East Zone 708 vs South Zone 242/6 (Devdutt Padikkal 62, Tilak Varma 56 batting; Mohammed Shami 2/17, Mukesh Kumar 2/36)
