India’s 1975 Hockey World Cup triumph: The victory that still stands alone

With the Indian teams in the Netherlands and Belgium preparing to begin their World Cup campaigns and make their mark, it is an apt time to look back at India’s only Hockey World Cup triumph in 1975.

India had never won the Hockey World Cup until then and found themselves a goal behind after Pakistan’s Mohammed Saeed scored in the 18th minute. Thereafter, as team manager Balbir Singh later recounted, “It was one of the best displays of hockey by the Indian team as they came from behind to beat Pakistan 2-1.” It remains India’s first — and, to date, only — Hockey World Cup title. It was also the first time the tournament was staged in Asia, with more than 50,000 spectators witnessing the final at Merdeka Stadium.

While it would have been fascinating to know exactly what was said during the half-time team talk, the response from the Indian players spoke volumes. Surjeet Singh equalised in the 44th minute with a penalty-corner strike, setting up a thrilling finale. The next few minutes were intense as India pressed relentlessly for the winner. Eventually, Harcharan Singh launched the decisive attack and, after VJ Phillips passed the ball to Ashok Kumar, he unleashed a powerful strike from distance to find the net. Pakistan protested the goal, but the referee remained unmoved.

For the record, India had also come close in the second edition of the tournament, only for hosts Netherlands to edge them out in a penalty shoot-out in the final. Pakistan had won the inaugural World Cup in 1971 before India finally broke through four years later.

Remarkably, all 16 members of the victorious Indian squad were presented with scooters by the Uttar Pradesh government in recognition of their achievement. The decision was conveyed to manager Balbir Singh by the state’s Director of Sports, the legendary Olympian KD Singh ‘Babu’. The presentation took place after an exhibition match was organised in Uttar Pradesh to celebrate the team’s success.

Indian Railways also honoured the triumph. The five members of the squad employed by the Railways received cash awards of ₹3,000 each from Railway Minister Mohammed Shafi Qureshi.

The significance of the victory, however, extended far beyond the rewards and recognition. India had not won a major title since claiming Olympic bronze at the 1968 Mexico Games, while the 1971 World Cup and the 1972 Olympic campaigns had ended in disappointment. In that context, the 1975 triumph was monumental. It was every bit as significant as an Olympic medal and restored Indian hockey to the summit of the world game.

With India having won back-to-back Olympic bronze medals in 2021 and 2024, and with the current squad boasting impressive fitness, skill and depth, there is genuine optimism surrounding this World Cup. The jersey controversy notwithstanding, the players remain fully focused on the task ahead. It would now be fitting for Hockey India to move on from the off-field debate so that all attention can shift to the action on the field in the Netherlands and Belgium.
