From Sacramento to Samaleshwari: Veer Joshi’s Unconventional Road to Indian Football

When 19-year-old Veer Joshi stepped onto the Salt Lake Stadium pitch as a late substitute for Samaleshwari Sporting Club, few expected what was about to unfold.

With the score locked at 2–2 against Kolkata giants Mohammedan SC in an ongoing Durand Cup clash, the young forward stood over an 81st-minute free-kick. What followed was magic: a beautifully curled effort past the wall and into the back of the net, sealing a famous win for the Odisha-based club.

For Veer, the moment was about far more than just three points. As he celebrated his first professional goal, he looked up at the stands where his family had gathered. Tears welled up in his eyes.

“It’s honestly been so surreal,” Veer shared after the match. “I couldn’t imagine it in any better circumstances to get the winning goal, a winning free-kick against Mohammedan in the Durand Cup. Having my family there in the stands, it was a dream come true. After the match, I got quite emotional just looking at them and seeing how happy and proud they were. Without their support, I wouldn’t be the person and player I am today.”

Deep Kolkata Roots & An Overseas Journey

While Veer’s footballing journey was forged in the United States and Europe, his connection to India, and Kolkata in particular, runs deep.

Both of his parents were born and brought up in Kolkata. His mother is Bengali, while his father’s family hails from Benaras. Veer was born in Philadelphia in January 2007 before his family moved to California when he was under a year old. He spent most of his upbringing in Sacramento.

Despite living thousands of miles away, Kolkata was never far from his life. His family maintains a residence in the Shyambazar locality, where his grandmother lives, and Veer visits every summer and winter break.

“I come to Kolkata every year,” Veer said. “My favourite food isn’t really a full dish, but I like Kathi Rolls a lot. We go to Aminia, which is just five or ten minutes away. And when I come in the summer, I love eating mangoes. It’s very nostalgic for me.”

The Road to Professional Football

Veer’s dream of playing professional football began early. By four, he was kicking a ball around; by six, he joined his first youth club, Placer United.

When he turned 10, he joined the Sacramento Republic Academy, spending four years developing his game. His appetite for growth took him across the globe. He moved to Spain to train with Getafe during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then went to England and spent time in Southampton’s academy setup before returning to Sacramento Republic’s U19 squad, where he earned call-ups to senior team training sessions.

Surprisingly, Veer achieved all of this without an agent representing him. His move to Samaleshwari Sporting Club happened purely through merit and modern technology.

“The head coach gave me a call after watching my highlight video from my last season with Sacramento Republic,” Veer explained. “They were looking for a striker and a goalkeeper, and I fit the profile they needed. He offered me an opportunity to play as a foreigner in the Durand Cup. After speaking with him and the staff, my family and I made a quick decision to fly out here and do the best I can.”

Navigating the OCI Landscape & What Lies Ahead

Because India does not recognize dual citizenship, Veer currently plays as an overseas player due to his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status. However, OCI participation in Indian sports has become a major topic of discussion nationwide, with the Sports Ministry actively looking into options like a “sports passport” scheme to allow OCI athletes to represent India.

Though Veer keeps an eye on developments, his focus remains strictly on the pitch and the task at hand with Samaleshwari.

“Regarding my future, it’s unclear right now,” Veer admitted. “I’m only committed to playing for Samaleshwari Sporting for this Durand Cup tournament. After that, I’ll consider all options and offers. I don’t have an agent, so every decision will be made together with my family. Right now, I’m just focused on helping us reach the quarterfinals.”

He also made a deliberate choice regarding his education to give football his complete focus. “Once I graduated from high school, I decided with my family to dedicate all my time to becoming a professional footballer rather than going to college in the US right away. I might go to university later, but right now, I’m pursuing this as a full-time career.”

Grounded Amid the Overnight Buzz

Since his stunning strike went viral across Indian football social media, Veer’s follower count and visibility have surged. Yet, the 19-year-old remains strikingly grounded.

“When I got here, people didn’t really know me,” he smiled. “I keep a small circle, just my close childhood friends, my teammates, and my family. But I’m so grateful for all the support, the comments, and the compliments. I hope this is just the start and that there’s much more to come.”

With his technical ability, international exposure, and undeniable raw potential, Indian football fans will certainly be keeping a close eye on where Veer Joshi’s journey takes him next.
