East Bengal Club’s hierarchy held an emergency meeting on Tuesday following speculation that Emami may be losing interest as an investor due to the uncertainty surrounding the future roadmap of Indian football. Club President Murari Lal Lohia attended the meeting along with Club Secretary Rupak Saha, Football Secretary Saikat Ganguly, former Secretary Kalyan Majumdar, Shanti Ranjan Dasgupta and Debabrata Sarkar.
On Monday, East Bengal club officials met Emami’s top management. It is understood that the Emami management is unhappy with the recent developments in Indian football, particularly the lack of clarity regarding the fixture schedule and long-term roadmap. This uncertainty is believed to be one of the main reasons head coach Oscar Bruzon decided not to extend his stay with the club after his contract expired on 31 May.
“Emami is not very happy with the lack of clarity in Indian football regarding the fixtures and roadmap. However, one thing we can assure our supporters is that East Bengal will build a strong squad for next season,” Debabrata Sarkar said after the emergency meeting.
Emami recently expressed concerns over planning for the upcoming season. Following the conclusion of the truncated Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, Bruzon announced that he would not continue with the club. The Spanish coach stated that his decision was influenced by the absence of long-term planning and a clear vision for the team’s future.
The East Bengal Club executive committee formally requested the Emami management to retain Bruzon, citing his successful tenure and the team’s recent championship triumph. However, a statement released by the Emami Group indicated that the management was in no hurry to begin preparations for the new season, creating anxiety among supporters about the club’s readiness for the upcoming football calendar.
Another major concern for East Bengal is that the contracts of all their overseas recruits expired at the end of the season. Players such as Miguel Figueira, Kevin Sibille, Mohammad Rashid and Youssef Ezzejjari were signed on one-year deals and are currently out of contract.
According to sources, Lohia’s company, Jupiter Wagons, could step in as one of the primary sponsors if Emami decides to part ways with the club. At present, everything depends on whether Emami continues as an investor for the upcoming season.
