What Sport Has Taught Me: Lessons in Resilience, Leadership and Life

When I look back at my childhood, I realise that some of my most important lessons were learnt without ever sitting in a classroom. They came on playing fields, in dressing rooms, after victories and, perhaps even more so, after defeats.
Sport has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I played because I loved playing. I had no idea that those moments were slowly shaping the person I would become.
The first thing sport taught me was resilience. You can prepare, give everything you have and still lose. There is no explanation that can change the result. You simply have to accept it, learn from it and turn up again the next day. That ability to begin again has stayed with me far beyond sport.
Sport also taught me respect — for the opponent who challenges you, for the teammate who stands beside you and for everyone whose contribution makes success possible. You learn very quickly that no achievement is ever entirely yours. Behind every moment are people who have helped you get there.
As I grew older, sport taught me about leadership. I learnt that leading people is not about always having the answers or being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes it is about listening. Sometimes it is about taking responsibility when things go wrong. And sometimes, it is simply about standing beside someone and making them believe in themselves.
Then there is discipline. Sport taught me to show up even on the days when I did not feel like it. To understand that progress is often invisible for a long time. That talent can take you only so far, but the willingness to keep working will take you much further.
Perhaps the most beautiful thing sport gave me, though, was people. Teammates became friends, coaches became mentors, and opponents sometimes became people I deeply admired. The memories I carry are not only of scores and results, but of laughter, disappointment, long days, shared struggles and the feeling of belonging to something bigger than myself.
Today, I understand that sport was never simply preparing me for the next game.
It was preparing me for life.
Life will not always be fair. Things will not always go according to plan. There will be victories, setbacks, moments of doubt and moments when you have to start all over again.
Sport taught me how to face all of them.
And for that, I will always be grateful.

Williams sisters suffer three-set defeat in emotional US Open doubles return

New York [US], September 5 (ANI): Tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams made a memorable return to the US Open doubles court at Arthur Ashe Stadium before suffering a three-set defeat against Maya Joint and Hao-Ching Chan.

The Williams sisters, playing together at the tournament for the first time since 2022, lost 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(7) to Australia’s Joint and Chinese Taipei’s Chan, the No. 14 seeds, in a contest that lasted three hours and two minutes. truewildslot.com

Despite the defeat, the night marked a special reunion for the 14-time Grand Slam women’s doubles champions, who received a huge reception from the New York crowd as they stepped onto the court in matching tennis whites.

The duo, who have won three Olympic gold medals together and remained unbeaten in 17 high-profile doubles finals, showed glimpses of their former dominance while battling against a younger opponent.

Joint and Chan claimed the opening set after taking the final three games, but the Williams sisters responded strongly in the second set. Serena and Venus fought through a tight contest and converted a crucial set point to force a decider.

The final set saw the Williams sisters erase a 1-4 deficit and bring the match level, but Joint and Chan held their nerve in the deciding moments. They saved three break points at 4-4 before edging the match tiebreak to seal victory.

Venus, 46, and Serena, 44, have played a defining role in women’s tennis, winning multiple Grand Slam singles and doubles titles while transforming the sport with their achievements and influence.

Although their comeback ended in defeat, the Williams sisters’ appearance provided fans with a nostalgic night and another opportunity to witness one of tennis’ most iconic partnerships on the US Open stage. (ANI)

US Open players face $50,000 fine for failing to fulfil duty even after defeat

US Open players face a potential $50,000 fine for skipping mandatory post-match media duties, even after elimination. The lesser-known rule covers press conferences and broadcaster interviews, with illness or injury providing exceptions. The requirement has previously caused controversy, most notably when Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open in 2021 after refusing to participate in mandatory media commitments.
