Siraj dilemma for India, West Indies suffer Greaves setback ahead of second ODI

Although the Indian team had no training session on Tuesday, head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and captain, Shubman Gill turned up at the Assam Cricket Association stadium in the evening, on the eve of the second ODI against the West Indies. It was learnt they were at the stadium to discuss with the selectors about the squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour. For Gill and Gambhir, the immediate objective, however, would be to win the second ODI and seal the three-match series against the Caribbean side with a game in hand. The Men in Blue registered a convincing win in the series opener at Thiruvananthapuram.

The spotlight will once again be on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for Wednesday’s game. Kohli scored a stunning hundred in the first ODI while Gill also struck a century as the hosts chased down 296 runs with 8 wickets remaining and 50 balls to spare. Rohit also looked good before he was dismissed on 32 runs. For the local fans, it could probably be the last time they will witness Ro-Ko playing an ODI in Guwahati.

Talking about the bowling, Kuldeep Yadav bowled an incisive spell to underline his importance in the attack, but the pace department looked less convincing in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, while Mohammed Siraj was left out to try Nitish Kumar Reddy with the new ball in a dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup next year. The team management’s decision to open the bowling with all-rounder Nitish, rather than the more experienced Mohammed Siraj, raised plenty of eyebrows.

There is a possibility that Siraj can be benched yet again unless the think-tank rotates out one of their frontline quicks. Punjab batting all-rounder Naman Dhir was handed a debut in the absence of injured Hardik Pandya. Dhir bowled five overs for 33 runs but did not get an opportunity to demonstrate his batting ability following his explosive form in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League.

For the West Indies, Wednesday’s game is effectively a must-win if they are to keep the three-match series alive. The Men in Maroon were dealt a huge blow as centurion in the first game, Justin Greaves, was ruled out with a calf injury. Greaves, who scored his maiden ODI ton in the first match, was involved in a solid opening partnership with John Campbell. The visitors batting will be bolstered with the presence of Sherfane Rutherford, who joined the squad on Monday. Shai Hope’s side will also be looking to improve its fielding after missed opportunities hurt them in the opener, including a dropped chance offered by Gill early in his innings. It will be interesting if the visitors would go for an extra pace by including Shamar Joseph. The 19-year-old leg-spinner Vitel Lawes could also be an option.

The venue has hosted two ODIs before and both involved high scores. In the first ODI held in 2018, India successfully chased 323 against West Indies with both Rohit and Kohli scoring hundreds, while in the second game staged here in 2023 against Sri Lanka, India posted a daunting 323 with a hundred from Kohli.

As far the weather forecast is concerned, it will be a pretty hot and humid day with the temperatures soaring as high as 34 degrees. There is also a chance of thunderstorms interrupting play.

Union Sports Minister Mandaviya, IOA prez PT Usha hail Indian women’s compound archers for Asian Games gold

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 30 (ANI): Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha hailed the Indian women’s compound archery trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep and Chikitha Taniparthi for their historic gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games, which saw them match the world record.

Indian archers were absolutely clinical in the title clash against China, beating them 238-234. India maintained their lead right from the first rotation, giving Jyothi her fourth Asian Games gold and a first Asiad gold medal to Chikitha and Prithika on their debuts.

This is India’s seventh gold at the Asian Games and takes the tally to 53 medals, including 21 silvers and 25 bronze medals. They equalled South Korea’s world record of 238, set in 2014, to secure the gold.

Posting on his X, Mandaviya hailed the archers for their “masterclass of precision and skill".

“Bullseye for Gold! Heartiest congratulations to Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep, and Taniparthi Chikitha on winning Gold in the Women’s Compound Team event at #AsianGames2026. The trio also equalled the World Record in a masterclass of precision and skill! #Cheer4Bharat," posted Mandaviya.

PT Usha also hailed the archers, saying that she watched the team dominate from the stands.

She posted, “GOLD! I had the absolute privilege of being in the stands today to witness our phenomenal women’s compound archery team—Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, and Prithika Pradeep—completely dominate the field, defeat China, and equal the WORLD RECORD!"

She also hailed the archers for their “sheer focus, nerves of steel & unshakeable consistency".

“The sheer focus, nerves of steel & unshakeable consistency they displayed throughout was pure masterclass. Meeting them right after their victory & seeing the tricolour fly high was very emotional. Girls, you have made the entire incredibly proud today! Keep aiming higher!," added the IOA president.

China started the gold medal match with three nines, finishing the first rotation with 27 points. On the other hand, the Indian trio started with three tens, making it a 30-27 lead for India.

China bounced back with two tens in the second rotation, while India also responded with three tens, making it India lead of 60-57 at the end of the second rotation. One of China’s earlier nines was converted to a 10, making it a 60-58 lead for India.

In the third rotation, China started with a nine and two back-to-back tens. Chikitha registered India’s first nine, dropping a point, while Prithika and Jyothi each scored 10s each, keeping India’s lead intact at 89-87.

At the halfway point, India was leading 119-116, with China registering two 10s and a nine to end the first half, while India maintained a perfect record of three 10s.

The second half started with three tens from China and a nine and two tens from India, with India still maintaining a two-point lead at 148-146.

China just could not get those three perfect tens, while India got theirs in the next rotation, and India’s lead increased by one point to 178-175. After a review, one of China’s early nines was upgraded to 10, making it 178-176 in favour of India.

China slipped with 10 and two nines, while India’s two tens from Prithika and Jyothi kept India in the lead at 208-204.

India finally beat China, managing a perfect 10 each to conclude the final. (ANI)
