And so, calcio’s “third apocalypse” has passed. A lot of Italians enjoyed the World Cup more than they expected to. Without a team to cheer for, again, a country turned its attention to different sports. And found its athletes dominating them.
On the day Spain defeated Argentina in New Jersey, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the first Italian driver to win a Formula One race in 20 years, extended his lead in the season’s standings by triumphing again at the Belgian Grand Prix. A week before that, Jannik Sinner defended his men’s singles title at Wimbledon. Since then, Italy has finished top of the medal table at the European Athletics Championships, and second in the European Aquatics Championships. Manila Esposito also took floor exercise gold at the European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Glancing over the front pages of La Gazzetta dello Sport this last week, you could almost miss that a new Serie A season is upon us. The transfer gossip that typically gets top billing at this time of year has faded into the background of a medal parade.

Dopingtopp med klar Russland-melding: – Vi er ikke naive
Russland er tilbake i OL-miljøet. Det tvinger Verdens antidopingbyrå til å være ekstra årvåkne.
– Vi er ikke naive. Vi vil være påpasselige, fordi utøvere fra andre land trenger garantier, sier Wadas generalsekretær Olivier Niggli til nyhetsbyrået AP.
Blant grepene som tas, er å få dopingprøver fra russiske utøvere analysert ved utenlandske laboratorier fram mot sommer-OL i Los Angeles i 2028.
For ti år siden avslørte Wada et statsstøttet dopingprogram i russisk idrett fra 2011 til 2015. Dopingen toppet seg da Russland i 2014 arrangerte vinter-OL i Sotsji.
Avsløringene førte til at flere idretter innførte sanksjoner mot landet.
Russland har for øyeblikket ikke et Wada-godkjent laboratorium.
– De kan ikke lenger gjøre tingene slik de gjorde i Sotsji. Det er ikke mulig på nåværende tidspunkt, sier Niggli.
Den internasjonale olympiske komité (IOC) opphevet tidligere i sommer midlertidig suspensjonen av Russlands olympiske komité (ROC). (NTB)
