Commanders Turn To Marcus Mariota In London With Jayden Daniels Sidelined

Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota will get his second straight start in place of the injured Jayden Daniels on Sunday when Washington faces the Indianapolis Colts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Head coach Dan Quinn announced the decision Friday after practice at the team’s luxury hotel accommodations outside London. Daniels returned to practice this week after dislocating his elbow in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. He's been wearing a protective brace and expressed no concerns about further damage. "He had a great week. It was awesome to have him back on the field in a limited fashion," Quinn said. "He'll be out. Marcus will start." Quinn called Daniels' return to practice "a huge positive step for us and for him." "We'll assess where we are next week when we get to a full week of practice all the way through," the coach said. Last week, Mariota threw three touchdown passes in the 33-31 win over the Seattle Seahawks. It’s the second elbow dislocation for Daniels, who missed most of the second half of last season with the same injury. The third-year quarterback, who led the Commanders to the NFC championship game in his rookie season, had said Thursday he was preparing mentally to start against the Colts and wasn’t worried about re-injuring the elbow. "That’s what the brace is for," Daniels said. The Commanders host the New York Giants on Sunday, Oct. 11. The team has a bye in Week 7. "Certainly, anytime you can practice, that’s a big deal," Quinn said. "So for him to get back, that was a big step for us. Typical for him, he’s more ready than you’d expect. That’s just kind of how he is." Quinn was asked what he needs to see to put Daniels back on the field. "It's really just like an entire group medical performance. Where he’s at, the practice part was a big piece of that today. But next week we’re planning on for him to get a full week of practice. That would be a big deal for us." Also Friday, running back Rachaad White (shoulder) did not practice for a third straight day. His game designation will be in the official injury report later Friday. White has rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries through three games. He also has 9 receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. The team signed Austin Ekeler on Monday and the veteran running back "had a good week," Quinn said. "He’s certainly not a player that you would say, ‘he looks rusty.’ That did not surprise me." Yankees-Rays ALDS Opens With a Gerrit Cole Vs. Drew Rasmussen Showdown

Gerrit Cole will start for the New York Yankees against Drew Rasmussen and the Tampa Bay Rays in Saturday night's AL Division Series opener. Cole was originally set to start Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, but the Yankees swept their division rival. The 36-year-old right-hander, a six-time All-Star, was 10-9 with a 3.61 ERA in 22 starts this season after recovering from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2025 season. Rasmussen was 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA for the Rays and made the All-Star team for the second straight season. The 31-year-old right-hander twice had surgery for a torn ligament in his elbow in college and needed an internal brace procedure in July 2023 that forced him to miss more than a year. He is 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 10 starts and one relief appearance against the Yankees, striking out out 70 in 59 ⅔ innings. Tampa Bay led the AL with 98 wins, earning a bye and home-field advantage at renovated Tropicana Field. They had to play their 2025 home games across the bay in Tampa at Steinbrenner Field — the spring training home of the Yankees — following damage to the Trop caused by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9, 2024. The Rays haven't won a postseason series since 2020, when they lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. They beat the Yankees 3-2 in the Division Series and won the franchise's second pennant. Reporting by The Associated Press. bettingx.club

Rams waive returner Xavier Smith

Earlier this week, Rams special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone told reporters that the team was not considering making a change at punt returner.

That plan has apparently changed.

Los Angeles announced on Friday that the team has waived receiver/returner Xavier Smith.

Smith had served as the team’s primary punt returner for each of the last two seasons. But he also has made some critical mistakes, including fielding a punt deep in L.A. territory that looked like it would be a touchback in the third quarter of last week’s eventual loss to Denver.

Smith averaged 9.9 yards per punt return and 20.6 yards per kick return over the first three weeks this season.

While he had not caught a pass in 2026, he recorded 18 catches for 303 yards in 2025.

The Rams’ unofficial depth chart listed Konata Mumpfield as the team’s backup punt returner. We’ll see if he in fact does get the nod at the position when L.A. takes on Philadelphia on Sunday.
