Cam Jurgens: Turf was just radiating heat in Nashville
The heat was on for the Eagles and the Titans during Sunday's game in Nashville.
Temperatures in the high 90s and a heat index that went even higher drove the temperature of the playing surface at Nissan Stadium to 157 degrees according to the Fox broadcast. Players were changing cleats before they melted and spraying their feet with water to try to keep them cool, but Eagles guard Cam Jurgens said after the game that his feet were "still hurting." turconews.click
"Halftime was like a NASCAR pit crew helping me get ready for the second half," Jurgens said, via Tim McManus of ESPN.com. "That turf was just radiating."
Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata said that the heat coming off of the turf field was another reason why he would favor playing on grass.
"I've never thought about how hot a stadium can be if it's turf. [The heat] just sits there and bounces up into you," Mailata said. "We've got to bring it up. This is why we want all grass fields, to create a standard of play in the league where we're not putting players in dangerous positions if we don't have to."
Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson called playing in those conditions a "mental test" and it was one that the Eagles were able to fight through well enough to win 24-20 and improve to 2-0 on the season.
Aaron Glenn on Jets taking the ball in OT: I wanted to control the clock
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn faced questions about a number of his decisions after Sunday's 20-17 overtime loss to the Packers.
Glenn chose not to use his final timeouts before the end of regulation, which was questioned by many because the Jets had a chance to get the ball back and end the contest without needing to go into extra time. After the game went into overtime, Glenn made another decision that came up for further inspection.
The Jets won the toss and opted to receive the kickoff. Quarterback Geno Smith was sacked on the first two plays and the Jets never got the ball back after punting because the Packers drove for a game-winning field goal. After the game, Glenn said he was hoping to leave the Packers with as little time on offense as possible.
"Usually, if you can get yourself in a situation like that and you can really control the clock, you can control exactly how they're going to play offense once you go and score," Glenn said, via a transcript from the team. "So, we control the clock, we go run it down; say we run it seven minutes, which we’ve done before, we've run a number of time off the clock, it only gives them so much time to try to rebuttal. We didn’t do a good job in that situation. And plus, to me, once you get the ball and you go down and score, you put the pressure on the other team that has to go ahead and score. But that didn’t happen for us the way I planned."
Having Smith drop back to pass is a curious way to control the clock, although the Jets had struggled to find momentum running the ball all afternoon. They had held the Packers' offense in check, however, and Green Bay ended the afternoon with 199 total yards, but Glenn went with his offense and that turned out to be the wrong choice.
