Salah Reportedly Helped Convince Fatih Tekke to Stay

Mohamed Salah and three senior Trabzonspor teammates reportedly urged Fatih Tekke to reconsider his resignation.

Trabzon-based Taka Gazete reported that Mohamed Salah, Trabzonspor captain Stefan Savić, André Onana and Mustafa Eskihellaç spoke with Tekke after his resignation announcement. The players reportedly encouraged the 48-year-old to reverse his decision, with several other members of the squad also supporting their appeal.

Tekke initially told those around him that he did not want to reconsider, according to the report. However, he later agreed to continue after interventions from the players and members of the club’s management. The report also described extended telephone discussions involving Trabzonspor vice-president Zeyyat Kafkas during the hours after Tekke announced his resignation.

Tekke made the decision during his post-match television interview following Thursday’s 4-0 defeat away to Ferencváros. The result eliminated Trabzonspor from the Europa League playoff round 5-0 on aggregate.

“As of now, I am resigning from my 18-month role,” Tekke said. “This is the punishment I give myself.”

The former Turkey international accepted responsibility for the defeat and described the performance as unacceptable. His announcement reportedly surprised Trabzonspor officials because he had not discussed the decision with the board beforehand.

Trabzonspor subsequently attributed the resignation to the emotional impact of the result and announced that the board had refused to accept it.

“Fatih Tekke remains in his position as head coach,” the club said in its official statement, confirming that he will lead the team in the next Süper Lig match against Amedspor.

Trabzonspor played most of the second leg with fewer than 11 players after Ruslan Malinovskyi received a straight red card in the 13th minute. Sidny Lopes Cabral was also dismissed during the second half.

Salah started the match but finished without a goal or assist before Tekke replaced him in the 64th minute.

The result sent Trabzonspor into the Conference League league phase. They had also lost the opening leg 1-0 despite Salah recording a team-high six attempts.

Their domestic campaign has produced four points from two matches. Salah scored both goals during a 2-1 victory over İstanbul Başakşehir after Trabzonspor opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Kasımpaşa.
