Ex-Egypt Boss Tardelli Claims Referees Helped Argentina

Former Egypt coach Marco Tardelli has accused match officials of helping Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final.

Speaking on Rai 1’s Notti Mondiali before Sunday’s World Cup final, Tardelli questioned Argentina’s route through the knockout stages.

“Argentina had to reach the final, and certain referees got them there,” Tardelli said. “It seems they have friends in high places.”

The 1982 World Cup winner did not identify any officials or provide evidence for his allegation.

Tardelli’s comments follow several refereeing disputes involving Argentina during the tournament. The most significant controversy for Egypt came during the round-of-16 meeting in Atlanta.

Egypt led 2-0 before Argentina scored three times in the final 11 minutes to win 3-2. However, the Pharaohs disputed several decisions by French referee Francois Letexier and his VAR team.

VAR advised Letexier to disallow a goal by Mostafa Ziko with Egypt leading 1-0. Officials identified a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martinez earlier in the attacking move.

Ziko later doubled Egypt’s lead, but Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi brought Argentina level. Egypt then demanded a penalty after Julian Alvarez challenged Mohamed Salah inside the area.

Letexier allowed play to continue, and Argentina launched the attack that produced Fernandez’s stoppage-time winner.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan described the officiating as unfair and claimed the tournament was “directed towards Argentina”. The Egyptian Football Association also questioned the consistency of the decisions and VAR’s application.

FIFA refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina subsequently rejected allegations of bias. He said VAR correctly identified Attia’s foul before Ziko’s disallowed goal.

Collina also backed the decision involving Salah and Alvarez. Officials viewed the incident as normal contact after Alvarez played the ball.

“Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials,” Collina said in a FIFA interview. He added that nobody, including FIFA’s president, could influence the refereeing team.

Tardelli coached Egypt during their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign in 2004. The EFA dismissed him after a 2-1 defeat away to Libya damaged the Pharaohs’ qualification hopes.

Argentina will face Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium after beating England 2-1 in the semi-finals. Lionel Scaloni’s side came from behind through late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.

Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran in Seattle to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, finishing second in Group G behind Belgium.

The Pharaohs reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history after drawing with Iran in the final Group G match in Seattle.

The result moved Egypt to five points from three matches, securing second place behind Belgium, who beat New Zealand 5-1 in the other group match. Egypt will face Australia in the round of 32 in Texas on July 3.

Hossam Hassan’s side needed only a draw to qualify automatically after opening the tournament with a draw against Belgium and then beating New Zealand for Egypt’s first-ever World Cup win.

Egypt took the lead in the fifth minute through Mahmoud Saber after an error by Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran had a chance to go ahead soon after when they were awarded a penalty, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved Mehdi Taremi’s spot kick. Soon after, Iran equalised in the 14th minute through Ramin Rezaeian.

The match remained level through the second half, with Egypt increasingly protecting the draw as Belgium’s win over New Zealand pushed them into second place.

Mohamed Salah was substituted in the 56th minute after pulling his left hamstring, which caused him trouble at Liverpool at the end of last season.

In a late turn of events, Iran scored a stoppage-time winner through Shoja Khalilzadeh, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. Iran also hit the bar late in added time.

The draw was enough for Egypt to progress automatically, but it left Iran third in the group on three points. Iran must wait to see whether they finish among the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups.

Belgium finished top of Group G on five points, ahead of Egypt on goal difference, while New Zealand were eliminated with one point.

أكد سعادة السيد سعد بن محمد الرميحي، مدير تلفزيون قطر سابقاً، أن الكلمات مهما بلغت من البلاغة، والعبارات مهما ازدانت بالفصاحة، فإنها تعجز عن الإحاطة بمآثر صاحب السمو الأمير الوالد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، رحمه الله، لأنه قائدٌ لم يصنع الإنجازات فحسب، بل صنع مرحلةً تاريخيةً كاملة غيّرت وجه دولة قطر، ورسخت مكانتها بين الأمم.
وقال الرميحي إنه تشرف بالعمل سنوات طويلة تحت قيادة الأمير الوالد في مواقع ومسؤوليات مختلفة، سواء في المجال الإعلامي أو الرياضي، كما حظي بشرف العمل سكرتيراً لسموه لشؤون المتابعة بالديوان الأميري، الأمر الذي أتاح له أن يلمس عن قرب صفات القائد الإنسان، وصاحب الرؤية الثاقبة، الذي كان يؤمن بأن خدمة الوطن مسؤولية وأمانة قبل أن تكون منصباً.

«قائد يؤمن بالإنسان «
وأوضح الرميحي أن الأمير الوالد كان يرى أن الإنسان هو الثروة الحقيقية للوطن، ولذلك جعل الاستثمار في الإنسان أساس كل مشروع تنموي، فشهدت قطر نهضة غير مسبوقة في التعليم والصحة والبنية التحتية والاقتصاد والإعلام والثقافة والرياضة، حتى أصبحت نموذجاً عالمياً في التنمية الشاملة.
وأضاف أن سموه لم يكن ينظر إلى المستقبل بعين الحاضر فقط، بل كان يخطط لعقود قادمة، وهو ما يفسر استمرار ثمار تلك الرؤية حتى اليوم، حيث ما تزال المؤسسات التي أسسها والمشروعات التي أطلقها تؤدي دورها بكفاءة، وتواصل تحقيق أهدافها في خدمة الوطن والمواطن.

وأشار الرميحي إلى أن الأمير الوالد منح الإعلام اهتماماً كبيراً، إيماناً منه بدوره في بناء الوعي الوطني ونقل الصورة الحقيقية لدولة قطر إلى العالم، فشهد القطاع الإعلامي تطوراً كبيراً، وأصبحت قطر تمتلك حضوراً إعلامياً مؤثراً على المستويين الإقليمي والدولي.
وأكد أن الأمير الوالد كان قريباً من الإعلاميين، يستمع إلى آرائهم، ويشجع المبادرات التي تعزز رسالة الإعلام المسؤول، وكان يؤمن بأن الكلمة الصادقة شريك أساسي في بناء الدولة الحديثة.

وأوضح أن الإنجازات الرياضية التي تعيشها قطر اليوم ليست وليدة اللحظة، وإنما هي امتداد لرؤية استراتيجية بعيدة المدى وضع أسسها الأمير الوالد، وآمن بها حتى أصبحت واقعاً يفتخر به الجميع.

«إرث خالد يتواصل عطاؤه»
واختتم الرميحي تصريحه قائلاً إن أعظم ما تركه الأمير الوالد ليس المباني أو المشروعات، وإنما الإرث الوطني الذي أصبح جزءاً من هوية قطر الحديثة، مؤكداً أن مسيرة البناء والتنمية تتواصل بقيادة حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى، حفظه الله، الذي واصل النهج ذاته، محافظاً على المكتسبات، ومضيفاً إليها إنجازات جديدة عززت مكانة الدولة على مختلف المستويات، ويشهد لسموه، حفظه الله، جهوده الواسعة والمخلصة في خدمة الوطن وحرصه على رفاهية شعبه، فاصبحت قطر، بفضلٍ من الله، ثم بفضل سياسته الحكيمة تتربع على الصدارة عالمياً في مستويات عده كالخدمات الصحية والاجتماعية والتعليمية وغيرها، ناهيك عن كون قطر أكبر دول العالم في مستوى دخل الفرد.
