Rio Ferdinand heaps praise on ‘special’ Liverpool star

Liverpool Wonderkid Backed by Rio Ferdinand to Dominate Premier League

Liverpool’s 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest may have hinged on Alexis Mac Allister’s decisive moments, but much of the post match conversation has centred on a teenager who needed barely 15 minutes to shift the narrative. Rio Ngumoha, introduced late on at the City Ground, delivered a cameo that has reignited debate about youth, opportunity and Arne Slot’s next move.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand did not hold back in his assessment. Speaking on his podcast, he described the Liverpool youngster in glowing terms and suggested that bigger things lie ahead.

Ngumoha Impact at Nottingham Forest

Ngumoha’s contribution against Forest was brief in duration, substantial in effect. The 17 year old completed more dribbles than Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo combined, according to Sofascore, and played an inviting cross to Hugo Ekitike that forced a sharp save from Stefan Ortega.

Direct, fearless and technically sharp, he immediately asked questions of experienced defenders. That willingness to run at opponents stood out in a tight contest that Liverpool eventually edged 1-0.

It was not a one off either. His disallowed goal against Brighton in the FA Cup, ruled out for offside without VAR intervention, underlined his composure in front of goal. He finished the move with assurance, only to be denied by a marginal decision.

Ferdinand Praise and Premier League Prediction

Ferdinand has now added his voice to the growing chorus calling for more minutes. He said: “He looks like a breath of fresh air. He’s standing full-backs up. He’s taking them on and then clipping it [to the] back post, making the right decisions. He’s still gonna make mistakes, but how can he not be starting a few more games?

“If your wingers who are playing aren’t performing, then he’s got a right to sit there and ask for a little cameo and go, ‘Let me start a game, at least’. He looks electrifying and I saw this kid when he was 12, 13 years old. He is a special talent.”

Ferdinand went further, placing Ngumoha among four teenagers he believes could shape the Premier League in years to come. He declared: “Right now, if I was going to put money on and going ‘these four’ – and you know what, it probably won’t even be these four that go and dominate the Premier League and do crazy things – if you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you’re seeing now, you’ve got Rio at Liverpool, Max Dowman [Arsenal], JJ Gabriel at Man United, and Jesse Derry at Chelsea.”

Arne Slot Selection Dilemma

Arne Slot, fresh from delivering the Premier League title in 2024/25, has handled Ngumoha with care. Elite football offers little patience, particularly at Liverpool where expectations are relentless. Managing development while chasing trophies requires balance.

Yet moments like Nottingham Forest make caution harder to justify. When a young winger changes tempo, commits defenders and injects belief into a title chasing side, questions follow naturally.

Liverpool supporters have seen prodigies rise and fall before. Hype can be a burden. What stands out with Ngumoha is his clarity of decision making and refusal to shrink from responsibility.

Whether Slot hands him a start against West Ham or continues with gradual integration, the trajectory feels promising. Ferdinand’s prediction of a player capable of dominating the Premier League may prove premature. It may also prove prescient.

For now, Liverpool have a special talent on their hands, and the Premier League has been put on notice.
