Marysville's Delaney Sherwood is Dispatch regular-season girls bowler of year

The high school girls bowling season is already deep into the postseason, with the Division I district tournament set for Feb. 24 and Division II state three days later.

Twelve central Ohio bowlers were featured in a poll to determine the central Ohio high school regular-season girls bowler of the year.

All of the votes from Dispatch readers are in, and the winner is Marysville’s Delaney Sherwood.

Closing in on her second Division I state tournament berth, the senior and Marian signee ranked third in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference in average (193.8 pins per game) and bowled a high game of 279 – second best in the area during the regular season.

Marysville (15-1, 12-0) held off Olentangy Berlin by one game for the COHSBC-B championship.

Sherwood began the postseason with a three-game series of 600 at sectional Feb. 21 at HP Lanes, finishing fourth. The Monarchs were 10th as a team to earn a district berth.

“Whenever she goes out to practice, she is always working on something specific to get better,” Marysville coach Johnathon Cusack said. “One of her strengths is not letting a bad shot get to her. She is very quickly able to put that behind her, move on and not let it affect her next shot.

“She does an amazing job juggling being a leader for this team while also focusing on herself during competition.”

Sherwood got 29.97% of the vote, holding off London’s Abbie Wheeler (29.05%).

They were followed by Pickerington Central’s Kelli Howiler (18.81%), Eastmoor Academy’s Makayla Davis (5.46%), Teays Valley’s Paige McDorman (4.47%), Berlin’s Madelyn Pigott (3. 43%), Jonathan Alder’s Ellie Wilkin (2.85%), South’s Valerie Kimball (2.73%), Hilliard Bradley’s Lydia Gordon (1.49%), Gahanna Lincoln’s Lacey Holden (1.08%), East Knox’s Kelsey Jensen (0.41%) and Whetstone’s Sydney McMullen (0.34%).

All of these players are candidates to make our All-Metro girls bowling team, which will be revealed in late March and honored during the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards on June 22 at Upper Arlington High School.
