Ameer Abdullah contract projection: Will Colts re-sign free agent?

Indianapolis Colts running back Ameer Abdullah is set to be a free agent this upcoming offseason.

So what might his next contract look like, and will the Colts re-sign him?

Ameer Abdullah contract projection

According to Spotrac, Abdullah is projected to sign a one-year deal worth $1.96 million. On a per year basis, this ranks 29th among all running backs. Abdullah is about to enter his age 33 season.

In terms of player age, contract status, and statistical production, Ty Johnson, Miles Sanders, and Kalen Ballage were used by Spotrac as comparisons to determine what Abdullah's deal could be.

Will the Colts re-sign Ameer Abdullah?

Abdullah was signed to the Colts' practice squad very early in the season. Then by mid-October, he was added to the 53-man roster.

As the season went on, Abdullah's role increased, and he began sharing the RB2 snaps with Tyler Goodson or taking on that role on his own when Goodson was sidelined.

Abdullah also handled kick return duties without Anthony Gould. He averaged nearly 30 yards per return, according to PFF.

At almost 33 years old, the Colts could look to get younger here as they search for depth and competition behind Jonathan Taylor. However, my guess is that Abduallah is re-signed. He provided a steady presence and can also help out on the return units.

Similar to the Khalil Herbert signing last offseason, if someone else emerges over the summer to secure a roster spot, moving on from Abdullah would be fairly easy.
