The first round of Champions League play-off matches were marred by accusations of racist abuse on Tuesday evening. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. has accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of making a racist remark during their first leg match in Lisbon, and Kelly has shown evidence of a racist comment that he was subjected to online.
Posting on his Instagram story on Wednesday morning, the former Newcastle and Bournemouth defender has shared a screenshot of a comment left on one of his posts, which reads: “Go back to the zoo.”
Kelly himself wrote: “Criticism comes all throughout life and in sports and I’ve always accepted this. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions but this I won’t accept.
“Words and actions have meaning and also consequences.”
He proceeded to tag the individual who left the comment as well as the company that he is believed to work for.
