Jonna Sundling and Maya Dahlqvist lived up to their top billing when they cruised to Olympic cross country team sprint gold on Wednesday.

Sundling opened a gap on the third of six laps which Dahlqvist managed to extend and the reigning world champions and 2022 silver medallists never looked back en route to victory.

Nadja Kaelin and Nadine Fähndrich earned silver for Switzerland 1.9 seconds back and Germany's Laura Gimmler and Coletta Rydzek pipped Norway for bronze.

For Sundling and Dahlqvist it was the first gold at the Games after they earned silver and bronze respectively behind compatriot Linn Svahn in the individual sprint.

Sundling also has a silver from the relay where the Swedish favourites lost the gold when Ebba Andersson fell twice and Norway took gold.

Wednesday's success was the fourth for the Swedish women from five races as they bounced back from the relay mishap. The concluding 50km are on the weekend.

The men's final was scheduled for later Wednesday, with Norwegians Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Einar Hedegart the top favourites. Klæbo can win a record equalling fifth gold at one Games and a record extending 10th overall.
