Tommy Fleetwood is one of the leading contenders to win the Genesis Invitational this week.
The Englishman is the fourth-best player in the world and finished in the top five at last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Now, if he does win at The Genesis on Sunday, Fleetwood may owe Jason Day some of his $3.6 million payout.
The Tour Championship winner is actually borrowing clothes from Day at the Riviera Country Club.
Tommy Fleetwood borrows Malbon sweater from Jason Day
Fleetwood was spotted wearing a Malbon sweater on the driving range at Riviera on Tuesday.
He then explained to Christopher Powers that he had borrowed some clothes from Day at Pebble Beach.
Day has a sponsorship deal with Malbon, while Fleetwood’s clothing deal with Nike has recently expired.
So, golf fans can expect to see Fleetwood play in Malbon gear or pro shop purchases over the coming weeks.
“If you were wondering whether Tommy was going to continue to wear pro shop merchandise, he is going to continue to wear pro shop merchandise,” Dan Rapaport said after seeing him on the range.
Tommy Fleetwood’s explanation for wearing random clothes
Fleetwood spoke about his Nike contract and his random clothing choices at Pebble Beach last week.
“Our contract [with Nike] was ending, and it just turned out like we didn’t end up in a place where I’m wearing Nike stuff this year,” he said. “Who knows what’s going to happen in the future?”
Fleetwood also explained that wearing pro shop apparel makes him feel like a golf fan rather than a professional.
“This is cool. Like I don’t know, like I feel like I’m a big golf fan,” he added. “I really like golf stuff, so it’s quite nice to be wearing like Pebble Beach clothing.
“My kids would absolutely love this stuff, so I feel pretty lucky to have it on.”
