Canada to face Switzerland for spot in women’s hockey gold medal game

Team Canada will face a familiar opponent as it looks to advance to the Olympic women’s hockey gold-medal game.

The Canadians will meet Switzerland in Monday’s semifinal game at the Milano Santagiulia arena (3:10 p.m. ET / 12:10 p.m. PT, CBC Gem, Sportsnet+).

It is a rematch of Canada’s opening game of the tournament, which the Canadians won 4-0. Natalie Spooner, Sarah Fillier, Julia Gosling and Daryl Watts scored in that game, with Canada firing 55 shots on goal. Canadian goaltender Emerance Maschmayer posted the shutout with six saves.

However, starter Ann-Renée Desbiens will get her spot between the pipes back for the semi-final game.

Canada finished second in Group A with a 3-0-1-0 record and defeated Germany in the quarterfinals. Switzerland was fifth in Group A with a 0-1-3-0 record but recovered to beat Finland 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

The winner of Monday’s semifinal will face the United States in the gold-medal game Thursday, after the Americans defeated Sweden 5-0 earlier in the day.
