Boris Becker and Patrick McEnroe react to Ben Shelton’s win over Taylor Fritz
Rodman is not the only person to message Shelton after his victory, with the world number nine also receiving messages from Boris Becker and Patrick McEnroe.
Shelton is coached by his father Bryan Shelton, who is a former top 60 ATP player, and Becker congratulated the whole family on social media.
Becker wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Congratulations to the Shelton family!”
It has been nearly 23 years since an American man won a Grand Slam singles title, with Andy Roddick the last to do so at the 2003 US Open.
However, former Grand Slam doubles champion Patrick McEnroe believes that the Dallas Open final showed that American men’s tennis is on the right path.
“USA men’s tennis in great shape,” wrote McEnroe. “Congrats @BenShelton on huge win @NexoDallasOpen. Both he and @Taylor_Fritz97 are absolutely tremendous players….and competitors!!!”
Despite winning his fourth career title, Shelton remains in the same place in the latest update of the ATP rankings.
Shelton is now scheduled to have a week away from the match court, before competing at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
