The one Real Madrid player who stands to gain everything from Alexander-Arnold’s comeback

The one Real Madrid player who stands to gain everything from Alexander-Arnold’s comeback

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s encouraging display against Real Sociedad may have come at the perfect time for Real Madrid.

While the focus has been on the English full-back’s return from injury, his presence in the starting lineup also brings relief to another key figure in the squad – Federico Valverde.

In recent weeks, injuries to both Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal forced Valverde to step into a deeper, more defensive role.

Instead of operating in his natural midfield position, the Uruguayan was often asked to cover the right side, limiting his influence in attacking phases.

It was a sacrifice for the team, but one that clearly reduced his impact in key moments.

The situation began to change against Real Sociedad. Alexander-Arnold started the match and completed 60 minutes before being replaced by Carvajal.

The transition went smoothly, and for the first time in weeks, Real Madrid had both natural right-backs available during the same game.

Relief for Valverde

With Alexander-Arnold expected to start the upcoming clash against Benfica, Valverde is likely to return to his preferred midfield role.

As such, that shift could have a major effect on the team’s overall performance.

Operating as a midfielder allows Valverde to influence every phase of the game.

From that position, he can carry the ball forward, break defensive lines with his runs, and arrive late in the box to create scoring chances.

He also becomes more active in pressing after possession is lost, helping Real Madrid regain control quickly.

When he is stuck wide or in deeper defensive zones, much of that impact disappears. But in midfield, his energy and movement become a constant threat.

For manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the return of Alexander-Arnold offers more than just defensive stability.

In fact, it restores balance to the team and brings one of his most important players back into a role where he can truly shine.

If everything goes as expected against Benfica, the biggest winner of Alexander-Arnold’s return might not be the full-back himself, but Valverde, who will once again have the freedom to influence the game from the centre of the pitch.
