Olympians are looking for love — or something a little more casual — at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, and condom supplies have already run out.

After a report from Italian outlet La Stampa said the free condoms available to athletes at the Olympic village "ran out in just three days,” according to an anonymous Olympian, the Milan Cortina Olympics organizing committee confirmed the shortage to PEOPLE on Sunday, Feb. 15.

"We can confirm that condom supplies in the Olympic Villages were temporarily depleted due to higher-than-anticipated demand," they said. "Additional supplies are being delivered and will be distributed across all Villages between today and Monday. They will be continuously replenished until the end of the Games to ensure continued availability."

The committee did not confirm the number of condoms they procured for the Games, but La Stampa reported that it was less than 10,000 for the 2,871 athletes — significantly less than the 300,000 the Paris organizers offered in 2024, though there were around 10,500 athletes at those Games.

One Spanish figure skater, Olivia Smart, showed off the condom offerings at the Olympic village in Milan on social media at the start of the Games.

"I found them," Smart, 27, said on TikTok Feb. 6, while zooming in on the yellow-wrapped condoms, stamped with the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic logos.

And Attilio Fontana, governor of Italy’s Lombardy region, which is home to Milan, talked about the condoms in a Facebook post on Feb. 8.

“Yes, we provide free condoms to athletes in the Olympic village,” he said. “If this seems strange to some, they’re unaware of the established Olympic practice. It began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention — a topic that shouldn’t cause embarrassment.”

“From a healthcare perspective, the Lombardy Region is fully committed to ensuring that international athletes and teams receive the best possible care during these weeks,” Fontana said.
